Protect our Children was established in 2015 with a mission to mobilize communities to prevent child sexual abuse. Born from The Ford Family Foundation's unwavering commitment to end child sexual abuse, Protect Our Children is now a state-wide ecosystem of partners aimed at increasing knowledge about child sexual abuse and promoting pro-prevention attitudes and prevention behaviors.
With a driven statewide coordinator at the helm and 17 committed partner organizations on the ground, Protect Our Children has made substantial progress in rural Oregon and Siskiyou County, California by uniting a powerful network of individuals and organizations. Their model is a web of intentionally localized efforts that contribute to a shared collective vision.
With continued funding from The Ford Family Foundation, Protect Our Children transitioned to be a project of Tides in 2021. Tides provides sophisticated nonprofit acceleration and fiscal sponsorship services that has fueled social change in more than 120 countries.
Since 2014, Protect Our Children has partnered with the Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) at the University of Oregon. This partnership and the ongoing developmental evaluation by CPAN have been critical to the project’s evolution, impact, and sustainability. CPAN conducts research and evaluation related to the prevention of interpersonal violence, focusing on child abuse, neglect, identity-based violence in childhood, and harm reduction. CPAN is focused not only on research but on putting that research into practice, connecting with community members to effect meaningful change across Oregon.
Mary Ratliff is the Project Director at Protect Our Children. Since 2014, Mary has led the growth of a now statewide ecosystem of partners throughout Oregon focused on preventing child sexual abuse. Mary is a founding partner of Connect to Protect Kids and will serve as a board member and program consultant.
